Sandvikens IF has finalized a new coach.

Former zoo trainer Thomas Lagerlöf, 54, takes over the club.

– It’s a club I like, says Lagerlöf.

Together with partner Kim Bergstrand, Thomas Lagerlöf led Djurgården in the Allsvenskan for several seasons. The duo was jointly named coach of the year 2019 after leading the club to SM gold.

In October 2024 Lagerlöf and Bergstrand left Djurgården and since then Lagerlöf has been away from football – until now.

The 54-year-old now takes over Sandviken, currently in eleventh place in the top flight.

– This feels fun. I am eager to get out on the football pitch again and I think that Sandviken is doing a lot of good things both on and off the pitch. It’s a club I like where you work hard and try to get better every day, Lagerlöf adds club website.

“Fits the association perfectly”

Sandviken plays its next match on Sunday, at home against Helsingborgs IF. However, Lagerlöf does not take over until after the summer break, which is why interim coach Elias Gärdh leads the team against HIF. Lagerlöf’s first match will be away against IFK Norrköping on July 19.

– We are proud to present Thomas Lagerlöf as our new head coach for the men’s team. With his experience at elite level, his football philosophy that matches the association’s identity perfectly and his strong leadership, we are convinced that he is the right person together with the rest of the team to drive our men’s team forward, says SIF’s sports director Peter Svensson.

In addition to his coaching career, Lagerlöf has, among other things, won two SM gold medals as a player, with AIK.
