Because of the controversial nature of the statements and their targeting of one of the largest public figures in the world, apart from the 2026 World Cup, and the platforms’ algorithms’ readiness to publish everything related to them, tweets and posts conveying Neves’ statements in different languages ​​have turned into popular posts that the algorithms re-publish.

The posts turned into a loyalty war that led to a fierce attack on the young Portuguese player’s Instagram account and anyone around him, including other players on the team such as Bruno Fernandes and Vitinha. The message was almost the same: “Respect the legend,” “Pass the ball more to Ronaldo,” and “You do not appreciate what he did for you.”

The matter did not stop at just excerpting Neves’ statements, but fake statements were put on Aragão’s lips calling on Ronaldo’s fans to tell their legend to retire, which caused more uproar globally until it reached Georgina Rodriguez, Ronaldo’s partner and the mother of two of his children, who reacted to the fake posts and denounced the method of raising new generations before discovering the confusion and deleting the post.

This viral spread of posts raises a pivotal question: Why did the algorithms of social media platforms deal with this crisis and exacerbate it in this way despite the continuous denials of all parties?

The algorithms of social media platforms, regardless of whether they are real or not, are basically designed to look for interaction and materials that can generate more interaction.

Therefore, as the volume of interaction on one of the articles or topics increases, the algorithm of social media platforms will increase the visibility of this topic and contribute to spreading it more and more, and with this increase in spread, new accounts appear looking for more interaction, so they also re-publish the content without verifying its source, starting after that a vicious circle of publishing and re-publishing to achieve views and increase its size.

A visit to Neves’ Instagram account reveals the scale of the crisis, as the player has approximately 3.2 million followers on his account with hundreds of thousands of comments on his recent posts and pinned posts, and the number of comments on one of the photos he published reached about 577 thousand comments, most of which talk about Ronaldo and the respect he deserves.

An examination of Google’s tool to track search rates around the world shows similar results, as the rate of interest and searches for the name Joao Neves rose to its peak on June 18, with the rate of searches for him increasing over the past week by about 450% in some keywords linking him to Ronaldo and 2100% in words that refer to meeting Neves.

Regarding the type of accounts that make such comments or re-publish false information from Neves and those close to him, the German agency’s report indicates that they are anonymous accounts. It is not known whether they are real accounts or fake accounts created specifically to increase the scale of the crisis.

The reason behind such accounts’ interest in maintaining the overwhelming state of anger that leads to hundreds of thousands of comments is to achieve financial profits. The more views there are, the greater the profit rate from posts and videos.
