The talks also included cooperation in developing the grain silo industry in Egypt, localizing manufacturing, and transferring Polish technology “to increase storage capacities, reduce losses, raise the efficiency of trading operations, and maintain the quality of crops.”
The largest wheat importer in the world
Egypt, one of the world’s largest wheat importers, has sought in the past few years to diversify sources of supply and enhance strategic reserves.
A recent Polish official statement indicated that the value of Polish agricultural and food exports to Egypt amounted to 104 million euros ($118 million) in 2025, an increase of 18% compared to 2024. These exports mainly included fresh eggs, pears, and cheese, in addition to animal products.
Shipping data shows that Egypt’s wheat imports in 2025 were primarily sourced from Russia and Ukraine, which together constituted 85% of total wheat imports.

High local production
Egyptian Minister of Agriculture Alaa Farouk said on Saturday that Egypt’s wheat imports decreased to about 12.5 million tons in the fiscal year 2025-2026, compared to up to 13.2 million tons in the previous fiscal year.
Farouk explained that local wheat production increased by more than 6.5% on an annual basis, to exceed 10 million tons in the fiscal year 2025-2026.
In the same context, Ahmed Adam, head of the Directorates, Cooperatives and Training Affairs Sector at the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture, told Reuters that the government has purchased about 4.7 million tons of local wheat from farmers since the beginning of the current supply season in mid-April until now.
Adham added that the quantity that the government has purchased from local farmers so far for use in the production of subsidized bread is described as a record quantity, and is estimated at about 94% of the targeted quantity this season, which amounts to about five million tons.
The season for supplying wheat to farmers in Egypt extends until August every year.
