US President Donald Trump said that the war weakened Iran and that “the American meeting with it was not out of despair, but rather Iran was desperate,” at a time when an opinion poll – conducted in the United States – showed that about 65% of Americans do not agree with the way the Trump administration is dealing with issues related to Iran.

Trump said on Friday that Iran “no longer has an air force, navy, air defense equipment, or radars,” adding, “Iran’s matter is over, and we will go until the end of the 60-day deadline, and they will not receive any money, not even 10 cents.”

Trump criticized the Democrats by saying that they “say that Iran is in a better position than it was 4 months ago, so can you imagine that this will pass?”

The majority rejects

Meanwhile, a poll conducted by the Associated Press and the NORC Center for Public Affairs Research revealed that most Americans do not approve of Trump’s approach to dealing with Iran, even after reaching an interim agreement to end the fighting.

The survey included the opinions of 3,040 people during the period from June 11 to 17 regarding the Trump administration’s policy towards Iran, and its results were published today, Friday.

The poll was conducted at a time when Trump was talking about the possibility of reaching an agreement with Iran, and its results showed that about 65% of Americans do not support the administration’s method of dealing with files related to Iran.

The results revealed that the majority of Democrats and independents view Trump’s measures negatively, compared to only 28% of Republicans.

The poll also showed that about 53% of participants believe that the American attacks on Iran were excessive.

Opinion polls indicate a decline in support for the three-month war with Iran among Americans, even after President Trump’s sudden shift from threatening Iran to resuming negotiations.

Americans’ opinions about the US President’s handling of the Iran file generally match the percentage of support for his job performance, which stands at 37%, a percentage that has not changed from what it was in a poll conducted by the Associated Press and NORC Center last May.

The position on Israel

The poll also included questions about the US administration’s approach towards Israel, as it was found that only 34% of Americans agree with this approach.

The report quoted James Hoffman – a 69-year-old Republican voter – as believing that Trump is following a wrong strategy regarding Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Hoffman said that Netanyahu will do what he wants, not what Trump wants.

On Wednesday evening, the US President and his Iranian counterpart electronically signed a memorandum of understanding in Islamabad, in preparation for ending the war that Washington and Tel Aviv started against Iran on February 28.

The Pakistani mediator officially announced that the memorandum would enter into force, with Iran beginning to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to navigation, in exchange for the United States beginning to lift the naval blockade imposed on Tehran since last April.
