Sweden and 18 other EU countries jointly support the establishment of camps for deportees outside the EU.
In a letter to the ongoing EU summit, the countries praise the agreement that was recently reached regarding a new return regulation with stricter rules regarding people who do not have the right to stay in the EU. Not least, it includes an opportunity to set up what are known as return hubs – places outside the EU where you can gather deportees who, for various reasons, cannot be sent back to their home countries.
“We call on willing member states to seek such solutions and engage with willing partners. We also call on the Commission to support member states in their efforts,” says the letter, drawn up at the initiative of Italy and Denmark.
Among the signatories, the major countries Germany, France and Spain are mainly missing.
