A complaint submitted by the young Syrian man, Nour Halabi, on social media platforms resulted in rapid government action, as the Syrian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology responded to his appeal and decided to stop access to websites dedicated to gambling and betting.
This step came with the aim of protecting users in Syria and enhancing the safety of the digital space, stressing the importance of direct interaction between the citizen and the responsible authorities.
In direct interaction with the complaint, Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdul Salam Heikal thanked blogger Nour Halabi, for being one of the first to draw the ministry’s attention to this problem.
Heikal stressed that the Ministry appreciates all the valid reports it receives, and seeks to address them directly. The Minister stressed that this suspension will continue until investigations and legal procedures are completed, while stressing that the freedom of legitimate use of the Internet will not be infringed.

He considered protecting people from fraud as a duty that they carry out with complete confidence, and pointed out that there are serious indicators indicating the existence of practices that may expose citizens to harm and deception.
For his part, the young man, Nour Halabi, expressed his pride and overwhelming happiness following the minister’s quick response, and expressed his deep thanks to the ministry for its efforts. He said in a blog post that his happiness with this decision “only God knows,” and he expressed his great gratitude for the speed of response to address the aforementioned problem.
The Ministry had explained in a press statement that this measure comes as a precaution, until the committee formed by the Ministry completes its work to verify the activity of these sites.
This suspension is based on the violation of gambling and betting activities against the applicable legal provisions, and because of the financial and social risks they entail that affect individuals and families.
In the context of confirming the comprehensiveness of the decision, the Ministry sent official letters to social media platforms to take concrete steps with the aim of stopping advertisements linked to these sites targeting inside Syria.
This decision was welcomed by Syrian tweeters who described the step as necessary, and blogger Kamal Al-Salami praised the decision announced by the Minister of Communications, and stated that this step protects citizens from potential harm, and confirms that Syria is on the path to recovery in all areas.
