China announced on Monday that strengthening its military army would benefit world peace, criticizing a report issued by an Australian research center that warned of the increasing risk of a direct strike from Beijing against Australia. Beijing also condemned the “serious strategic mistake” contained in the report, affirming its commitment to the “path of peaceful development.”
Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said in a press conference today: “The growth of Chinese military power represents an increase in the forces of world peace.” The Chinese spokesman also stressed that the goal of his country’s development of its military power is “to protect its national sovereignty, security, and development interests, and does not target any specific country.”
Lin urged relevant institutions to “stop exaggerating the so-called Chinese threat, and view China’s development objectively, fairly and rationally.”
These statements come in response to a report issued by the Lowy Institute yesterday, Sunday, which stated that China “is capable of launching a direct missile strike against Australia, and that the risk of this step is increasing as Beijing is assembling long-range and hypersonic weapons, and building islands in the South China Sea.”
The group, which issued the report and is based in the Australian city of Sydney, said that China’s ability to strike Australia will grow over the next decade with “increasing numbers of DF-27 medium-range ballistic missiles, and possibly intercontinental ballistic missiles equipped with conventional weapons.”
Last December, the US Army announced that the range of these missiles ranges between 5,000 and 8,000 kilometers.
The report concluded by saying that the main threat to Australia is represented by Chinese missiles launched from ships and submarines, in addition to a new medium-range ballistic missile capable of reaching the Australian continent from China, noting that it “assesses Beijing’s capabilities, not its intentions.”
It is noteworthy that Australia reformulated its military strategy three years ago in response to China’s rapid maritime expansion and escalating tensions between Beijing and Washington, focusing on deterring any opponent from its northern approaches.
