On Friday, Anthropic has closed access to two of its AI models following directives from the United States.
The decision, which bans all foreign nationals from using the technology for “national security reasons,” comes amid a fraught legal battle between the company and the presidential administration.
The order prohibits all foreign nationals – including Anthropic’s own staff – from using the models. This forces the company to shut off access for all customers.
The company states that it has not been revealed specifically what worried the authorities. According to them, however, the authorities believe they have become aware of a method to bypass the security barriers of the Fable 5 model in a way that could facilitate hacking.
Fable 5 is a locked version of Mythos 5, an advanced model that has been withheld from the public as it is highly capable of finding vulnerabilities in program code.
Anthropic disagrees with the risk analysis, emphasizing that Fable 5 does not provide hackers with unique tools. They warn that such measures could stop the development of the entire industry.
This comes amid a legal battle in which Anthropic denied the Trump administration access to its technology for mass surveillance and autonomous weapons, leading the Pentagon to terminate its contract with the company.
This is how Claude Mythos works
Claude Mythos is an AI model developed by American Anthropic. The model can code and understand programming code, and according to the company, is better than almost all humans at finding and exploiting vulnerabilities.
How to use it:
1. It can read the program’s source code in a computer isolated from the Internet.
2. Mythos develops a hypothesis of possible vulnerabilities.
3. The hypothesis is tested to confirm or reject the suspicions, or adapt something and make another attempt.
4. When Mythos finds several smaller vulnerabilities, it tries to chain them together to create a more powerful attack.
5. The model writes a bug report.
