US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday his intention to attend matches in the FIFA World Cup, as the most prominent football event of all time approaches.
Trump said, in response to a question from Agence France-Presse, inside the Oval Office about whether he plans to attend any matches: “Yes, yes, I will attend.”

He did not provide additional details, but FIFA President Gianni Infantino had stated that he expected Trump to hand over the championship trophy to the winning team in the final match scheduled for July 19.
Last year, Trump participated in the coronation ceremony during the Club World Cup final at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, the same stadium that will host the World Cup final, and was then subjected to shouts of boos from some of the attendees.
The tournament, hosted by the United States, Mexico and Canada, is seen as a huge sporting event, and Trump sought to leave his mark on it, repeatedly referring to his role in supporting the hosting file during his first presidential term.
He also has a close relationship with Infantino, to whom last December he awarded a “special peace prize.”
However, the tournament faced challenges off the field, including a significant increase in ticket prices, in addition to restrictions and tightening of immigration policy that prevented some fans, officials, and even the Somali international referee, Omar Arten, from entering the United States.
Trump explained that his administration is working to address these issues, saying: “We are working on this closely to ensure that the right people enter our country.”
