Two independent disturbances caused Svenska kraftnät to start four gas turbines on Monday, the authority states in a press release.

The transmission between electricity area 2 and 3 was reduced when a line was disconnected after an alarm about people climbing power line poles outside Bollnäs.

In parallel, 500 MW of import from a cable between Poland and electricity area 4 in southern Sweden disappeared.

“In order to maintain operational reliability, support services were activated to such a high extent that all bids in SE3 and SE4 ran out. We therefore also had to start four gas turbines,” says Pontus de Maré, operations manager for Svenska kraftnät, in the press release.

The risk of power shortage caused the authority to flag “yellow”, whereupon Sweden bought in a total of 400 MW from Lithuania and Norway.

Svenska kraftnät is now investigating how prices were affected by the support services that were activated during the incidents.
