At least 12 people were injured yesterday evening, Saturday, in the city of Toledo, Ohio, following an exchange of gunfire between gunmen near the Old West End Festival.

The police said – in a press conference – that two of the injured were in critical condition, and several victims were transferred to nearby medical facilities for treatment, while the ages of the injured ranged between 14 and 61 years.

Searches are still ongoing for any suspects, in what Toledo Deputy Police Chief Joseph Heffernan described as a “very active” investigation.

Details of the incident

The authorities combed the area in search of suspects, interrogated witnesses and reviewed videos taken with mobile phones, while police suspected that at least two people had exchanged gunfire near the festival.

The Toledo Police Department reported in a post on the X platform that security personnel were dispatched at approximately 5:37 p.m. following a report of a person being shot.

The investigation currently includes the crime scene in the area of ​​Delaware Street and Robinwood Street. Residents and visitors are asked to avoid the area and expect a heavy security presence while officers continue their search. Investigators are working to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Toledo’s deputy police chief told reporters that it appeared there were at least two people involved in the incident and that it “most likely was an exchange of gunfire.”

The Old West End Festival is a popular annual gathering of live music and street parties in a historic neighborhood of Toledo.

This incident is not the first of its kind, as the Armed Violence Archive website recorded 171 mass shooting incidents in the United States this year.

The site defines a mass shooting as an incident in which at least four people are injured as a result of gunfire, excluding the shooter.

Firearms are widespread in the United States, and thousands of people die across the country from gunshot wounds every year.
