Air Canada announced on Friday that it was suspending its flights to Cuba indefinitely, in light of the difficulties the island has been experiencing since US President Donald Trump’s decision to intensify pressure on it.
“Given the continuing political and economic turmoil in Cuba, Air Canada has decided to suspend its services to the island indefinitely,” it said in a statement.
Air Canada added that it seeks to give its customers greater clarity regarding future travel plans.
Last February, the Canadian National Airlines announced the suspension of its flights to Cuba until November.
Canadians constitute an important segment of the Cuban tourism sector, but this source of revenue declined with Washington cutting off fuel supplies to the island and threatening to invade it.
Last week, the Canadian company Blue Diamond Resorts announced the closure of 62 of its tourist facilities in Cuba.
The oil embargo imposed since last January led to a severe shortage of diesel needed to operate generators, which affected the crumbling electricity network and caused power outages of up to 22 hours a day, in addition to an almost complete disruption of transportation.
The island suffers from shortages of drinking water, food and medicine, making it increasingly dependent on aid shipments from Mexico and China.
