The clubs Auckland City of New Zealand, Al-Ahly of Saudi Arabia, and Mamelodi Sundowns of South Africa have previously reserved their places in the 2026 Intercontinental Cup, after winning Champions League titles in the continents of Oceania, Asia, and Africa, respectively.

The competition regulations stipulate that the holder of the Champions League title will play the final match of the global tournament directly.

Paris Saint-Germain defeated Arsenal 4-3 on penalties, which both teams decided in the final match of the continental competition, at the Puskas Arena in the Hungarian capital, Budapest.

Regular time ended in a 1-1 draw, as German Kai Havertz scored for Arsenal early in the sixth minute.

But Dembele equalized for Saint-Germain in the 65th minute from a penalty kick.

The two teams resorted to playing an extra time of half an hour, divided equally into two halves, without resulting in anything new, so the penalty shootout had the final say, awarding the championship to Saint-Germain, who retained the title for the second time in a row, after winning it for the first time last season, at the expense of Italian Inter Milan.
