On Wednesday, Saudi Arabia announced that it would support Yemen with oil derivatives worth $150 million, to cover the needs of power stations.
The Saudi ambassador to Yemen, Muhammad Al Jaber, said through his account on the “X” platform that, with the follow-up of Saudi Defense Minister Prince Khalid bin Salman, “the generous approval was issued to provide urgent support to the sisterly Yemeni government with oil derivatives worth $150 million, through the Saudi program for the development and reconstruction of Yemen.”
Al Jaber added that the support came “to cover the needs of operating diesel and diesel electricity stations in various Yemeni governorates.”
The Saudi ambassador explained that this support comes as an extension of “the Kingdom’s established approach to supporting the brotherly Yemeni people and alleviating their human suffering, especially in light of the rising temperatures,” noting that it will contribute to “stabilizing electricity services, supporting commercial and service activities related to them, and enhancing the elements of development and stability in Yemen.”
For his part, Chairman of the Yemeni Presidential Council, Rashad Al-Alimi, thanked the Saudi leadership “for the new oil derivatives grant directed to operate power plants,” considering that it embodies Saudi Arabia’s standing by “Yemen and its people, its political leadership, and its strong commitment to supporting its aspirations for security, stability, peace, and development.”
This grant comes within the framework of efforts to enhance stability and advance the path of economic recovery in a country facing one of the worst humanitarian crises in the world as a result of a conflict that has been ongoing for 12 years between the Yemeni government and the Houthi group.
Demand for electricity in Yemen reached its peak due to high temperatures largely during the summer.
Last January, the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen signed an agreement with the Yemeni Ministry of Energy and Electricity and the Yemeni Oil Company “PetroMasila” with the aim of purchasing oil derivatives from “PetroMasila” to feed more than 70 electricity generating stations in the Yemeni governorates.
Earlier, the Saudi Development and Reconstruction Program for Yemen provided grants for oil derivatives, which included:
- A grant in 2018 worth $180 million.
- Another grant in 2021 worth $422 million.
- A grant in 2022 worth $200 million.
