US President Donald Trump said on Sunday that he is holding “good talks” with his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, and his Ukrainian counterpart, Volodymyr Zelensky, as part of his efforts to end the war that has been going on between the two countries for more than 4 years.
“We are working on the situation in Russia and Ukraine, and we hope that we will succeed,” Trump added in an interview with Fox News Channel’s “The Sunday Briefing” program.
Trump stated that he did not want to reveal the last time he spoke to Putin.
He added, “I am holding talks with him, and I am holding talks with President Zelensky, and they are good talks,” without specifying the timing of the contacts with either leader.
He continued: “The hatred between President Putin and President Zelensky is ridiculous. It’s crazy. And hatred is a bad thing. Hate is a bad thing when you’re trying to settle something, but it will happen.”
Trump pledged to end the war that began with a Russian attack on Ukraine in February 2022, but the conflict is still continuing more than a year into his second term.
On the ground, the Ukrainian army said on Sunday that it had targeted a major Russian oil refinery in Yaroslavl, northeast of Moscow, which is considered extremely important for the Russian army’s logistical operations.
The Ukrainian army added in a statement that there were reports of a fire breaking out at the facility following the attack, and that the extent of the damage was being determined.
Earlier on Sunday, the Ukrainian authorities announced that 3 people were killed and at least 4 others were injured as a result of Russian strikes across Ukraine.
