Fernandes said in an interview with Wayne Rooney in a report published by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) yesterday, Friday, “It would be a wonderful thing to end the next World Cup with Cristiano (Ronaldo) winning the tournament.”

“I really hope we can achieve this, not only for Portugal, but for everything Ronaldo has given to football and the world,” the Portuguese player and Manchester United captain said.

Ronaldo, one of the great players who never won a World Cup, is the all-time top scorer in international football with 143 goals.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner was part of the Portugal national team that won the 2016 European Championship and also won the European Nations League title twice.

Portugal will open its campaign in Group Eleven on June 17 against the Democratic Republic of the Congo, followed by its match against Uzbekistan on the 23rd of the same month. Both matches will be held in the American city of Houston. It will conclude its group stage matches against Colombia on June 27 in Miami.

The World Cup will be held from June 11 to July 19 in Canada, the United States and Mexico.
