The American CNN network, citing sources, said that Israel shared intelligence information with the United States indicating that Iran recently developed a plan to assassinate President Donald Trump, in a development that increases tension between the two sides, while the ceasefire agreement is under mounting pressure.
The network quoted two informed sources as saying that the Israeli warning arrived in Washington this week, noting that the United States had monitored – in recent weeks – a continuous flow of intelligence information regarding possible plans to target Trump, but the Israeli warning was new and related to a specific plan.
American officials told the network that the Israeli report may be – in part – an attempt to influence the decision-making process within the Trump administration, at a time when the American president is studying the possibility of moving towards a military escalation against Iran.
According to the network, the details of the plan that Israel warned about were not immediately clear, while two informed sources said that the United States did not independently verify the validity of the Israeli information, nor was it tracking this plan before the warning arrived from Tel Aviv.
Growing American fears
The network added that Washington had warned – for years – of the possibility that Iran would seek to assassinate Trump in response to the strike he ordered in 2020, which resulted in the killing of the commander of the “Quds Force” in the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, Qassem Soleimani.
According to the network, when the White House was asked about the Israeli warning that the Wall Street Journal was the first to reveal, it referred to statements made recently by Trump regarding Iran’s intention to assassinate him.
Trump told reporters – last Wednesday – that Iran wants to “get rid” of the leader of the United States, adding that he knew that his name was on Iranian target lists. Later, he said that he had recently seen a new list that classified him as the first target for Iranian assassinations, without it being clear whether he was referring to the intelligence information provided by Israel.
According to the report, crowds of Iranians – over the weekend – chanted anti-Trump phrases, at the funeral ceremony of the late Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, who was killed at the beginning of the American-Israeli war on Iran, according to what the network reported.
Two sources familiar with recent American intelligence information said that the intelligence services are following several parties that have discussed carrying out possible attacks, but have not carried them out so far. One of the sources added that Washington is concerned about the possibility of Iran targeting a number of current and former senior American officials.
However, the same source indicated that the Israeli report is viewed within some American intelligence circles as part of a broader effort to influence Trump’s decisions regarding Iran, pointing out that some American officials usually deal with intelligence reports coming from Israel with caution.
A faltering negotiating path
This comes in light of disagreements between Trump and Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu regarding the diplomatic track with Iran and Israeli military operations in Lebanon, which complicated the course of the talks.
On Thursday, Trump and Netanyahu held a phone call, at a time when the Israeli Prime Minister is expected to go to Washington soon to hold talks with the American President.
A US official said – yesterday, Thursday – that diplomatic efforts with Iran are still continuing behind the scenes, despite the resumption of the exchange of strikes between the two sides, and despite Trump’s announcement that the memorandum of understanding with Tehran “has ended.” Washington and Tehran are seeking to reach a nuclear agreement by mid-August.
According to officials, preparations were underway to carry out possible strikes yesterday evening, Thursday, if necessary, but they were later withdrawn to make way for the diplomatic track.
On June 18, Washington and Tehran signed a memorandum of understanding, and – through the mediation of Pakistan and Qatar – they entered into difficult negotiations to reach a final agreement, before US President Donald Trump said – last Wednesday – that the memorandum was “finished.”
