Monaco’s president raises doubts about Pogba’s future with the team sports

Thiago Scuro, CEO of French club Monaco, hinted at the possibility of midfielder Paul Pogba leaving the team before the start of the 2026-2027 French League season.

Pogba joined Monaco last June on a two-year contract, after the end of his suspension due to a doping case.

But the French international missed a large part of the 2025-2026 season due to physical problems, and he only participated in six French League matches, for a total of only 115 minutes. He was also absent from the team’s roster in the knockout rounds of the Champions League.

Scroo admitted earlier that the deal to sign Pogba did not meet the desired expectations, and when asked about the possibility of the 33-year-old player leaving, he said in statements to the French Football News website: “Yes, of course, he may leave and perhaps he will stay.”

He added: “The matter is very complicated. We have great respect for him, first of all, as a person. When he arrived here, he was very positive and helped the young players, but the truth is also that the project with him did not succeed in the way we had hoped for last season. When we started this experience, our expectations were completely different.”

Monaco recently appointed Brazilian Filipe Luis as the team’s technical director in preparation for the new season, at a time when reports indicate that the club needs to reduce the salary bill, after imposing a spending cap, which may make Pogba one of the candidates for departure.

Scorro explained that the final decision regarding the player’s future will return to the new coach, who described Pogba as an “exceptional player” and stressed that he intends to hold sessions with him in the coming days.

The Monaco CEO concluded his statements by saying: “We have to be fair to him, and follow his preparations week after week, and see the extent of his development physically and technically. After that, the final decision will be in the hands of Filipe Luis, whether to give him a chance to participate or not. We still have the entire summer to evaluate Paul’s level.”
