South Korean company Samsung Electronics on Tuesday expected its operating profits for the second quarter of this year to rise by 1,810.3% compared to the previous year, driven by the growing demand for semiconductors dedicated to artificial intelligence.
The group explained in a financial disclosure statement that these operating profits for the period from April to June amounted to the equivalent of 51 billion euros ($58.3 billion).
Its quarterly revenues are expected to rise by 129% year-on-year to reach the equivalent of 98 billion euros ($112 billion). This estimate did not include net profit expectations.
The growing global demand for advanced memory chips used in artificial intelligence data centers has contributed to giant South Korean semiconductor companies recording record profits this year.
Samsung is one of the biggest beneficiaries of the artificial intelligence boom, supported by the largest memory chip production capacity in the world.
On the other hand, the Device Experience Unit, which includes Samsung’s business in consumer electronics and mobile phones, is expected to have recorded relatively weak results, according to what was reported by the South Korean Yonhap Agency.
On June 29, Seoul revealed a huge plan with a total value estimated at more than a thousand billion euros ($1.4 trillion) over 10 years, to build advanced semiconductor factories and data centers dedicated to artificial intelligence.
The equivalent of 455 billion euros ($520 billion) will be allocated from this plan to finance the construction of four new factories by Samsung and its local competitor, SK Hynix, in southwest South Korea.
