French President Macron speaks at a joint press conference with Ahmed al-Sharaa in the Syrian capital Damascus.

France and Syria are reinstalling ambassadors in each other’s countries, says Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa.

The announcement came in connection with French President Emmanuel Macron’s visit to Syria on Tuesday. Ambassadors in France and Syria will be on site shortly.

– I am pleased to be able to announce today our agreement to start exchanging stationed ambassadors between Damascus and Paris as soon as possible, says Ahmed al-Sharaa at a joint press meeting with Macron.

The French embassy in Damascus closed in 2012 when the civil war in the country broke out.

Macron is the first Western European head of state or government to visit Syria and al-Sharaa since the fall of the Assad regime in late 2024.
