A march organized by hundreds of members of the far-right Patriot Front movement in Washington, DC, revived the debate about the rise of white nationalist rhetoric in the United States, after more than 400 masked demonstrators appeared raising the American flag upside down, in a sign used in American culture to indicate that the country is facing an existential threat and has deviated from its path.

The “Shabakat” program on Al Jazeera showed video clips of the march’s participants roaming the streets of Washington, beating drums and chanting slogans including “Reclaim America,” “Freedom,” and “Victory,” while one of the organizers appeared directing the participants in the field, saying, “Five flags in front…that’s all. Are we ready?”

The program indicated that the participants belong to the Patriot Front movement, which was founded in 2017, and follows an extremist nationalist discourse that is hostile to immigrants, blacks, and pluralism, and seeks – according to the program – to turn the United States into a white ethnostate.

He added that the movement’s members appeared in uniforms that included khaki hats, blue shirts, white masks, and black glasses to hide their identities, and video clips were spread of them riding the subway on their way to the Capitol building to demonstrate.

The program pointed out that the most widely shared scene was a picture of a brunette girl sitting inside a metro car while dozens of masked officers surrounded her. Although she was not harmed, the image sparked widespread interaction on social media platforms, and international media and newspapers compared it to the image of American activist Rosa Parks, who became a symbol of the struggle against racial discrimination after she refused to give up her seat on a bus in Montgomery in 1955.

Reactions varied on the “X” platform, as activist Brian wrote

The image of the black girl embodies the reality of the United States under the presidency of Donald Trump. He wants to take his country back from him

In return, Timothy said

The girl sat safely and was untouched, thanks to Trump

As for Alex, he said:

The members of the movement – despite their expanding influence – still hide their faces like cowards. It is a weak and hollow movement that is destined for the dustbin of history

While Brent went on to question the identity of the participants, and said:

Most of them are government employees or agents associated with the FBI

While Ochieng said

I feel relieved to leave Washington; White supremacists are traitors to the American spirit. Beware of the growth of racism and fascism

When US Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum was asked about the movement, he confirmed that he did not agree with its ideas or demands, but stressed that its right to organize marches and demonstrate is guaranteed by the US Constitution, even if American democracy appears, in the eyes of some, to be chaotic because of that.
