The European Parliament agrees to vote on an extension of the internet giants’ voluntary search for child abuse material.
With 331 yes votes against 304 no and 11 abstentions, the parliament approves that a decisive vote can be held on Thursday.
This opens the way to, after all, extending rules that expired last spring, which created legal uncertainty about the possibilities of searching for perpetrators.
– Today’s vote is about whether we want to protect our children or the perpetrators, Tomas Tobé (M) urged his colleagues before the vote.
– Everyone who votes yes today is voting for mass surveillance, in turn countered the German colleague Mary Khan from the far-right party AFD.
The battle over the EU rules has for many years been infected, with accusations from online activists that the review is too far-reaching.
