Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz announced today, Sunday, his departure from coaching the Ghana national team, following the exit of the “Black Stars” from the round of 16 of the 2026 World Cup following their loss to Colombia by an unanswered goal.

The end of Queiroz’s career with the Ghanaian national team came after a short period, as he took over the leadership of the team in mid-April, before leading it in its first official challenge to reach the eighth final, where his career ended against the Colombian national team.

A historic number in the World Cup

Despite the shortness of his experience with Ghana, Queiroz recorded a new personal achievement, after he equaled the record of Serbian coach Bora Milutinovic by leading a national team in five consecutive editions of the World Cup, as he had previously appeared on the bench with Portugal in the 2010 World Cup, then with Iran in the 2014, 2018 and 2022 editions, before leading Ghana in the 2026 edition.

A farewell message and a call for reform

In his farewell statement, the 73-year-old Portuguese coach expressed his “pride” in what the Ghanaian team achieved during the tournament, stressing at the same time that he retains “the healthy dissatisfaction of those who always want more.”

Queiroz stressed that the success of the Ghana national team in the future does not depend only on what happens inside the field, but must start from outside it, calling for providing the best possible environment for preparation, protecting football talent, and working to develop it, considering that Ghana has an exceptional base of players that deserves a long-term project.
