The newspaper “Israel Hayom” reported that the office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is making preparations to hold a new summit with US President Donald Trump in Washington this July, as part of the intense political consultations between the two sides following the end of the US-Israeli military campaign against Iran.
The newspaper quoted informed sources as saying that arrangements are being made that may lead to holding the eighth meeting between Netanyahu and Trump since the latter’s return to the White House in January 2025, in an indication of continued close coordination between the two leaders regarding major regional and international files.
She added that the preparations are not limited to the upcoming visit to Washington, but also include arrangements for another visit to New York in conjunction with the start of the work of the new session of the United Nations General Assembly next September.
According to the sources, Netanyahu is likely to head to New York after the end of Yom Kippur on September 21, seeking to hold an additional meeting with Trump on the sidelines of the General Assembly meetings, although these arrangements are still under discussion and have not been finally decided.
Talk about the upcoming summit comes at a time when relations between Trump and Netanyahu have witnessed notable differences in recent months regarding the recent agreement between Washington and Tehran, as well as the escalation in Lebanon.
For its part, CNN quoted an informed Israeli source as saying that Netanyahu is planning to visit Washington and meet with Trump at the beginning of next week (Monday) at the latest.
“Netanyahu knows who is making the decision.”
Earlier, US President Trump said that Netanyahu requested a meeting with him at the White House, suggesting that the meeting would be held soon after his return from his participation in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit.
Axios quoted Trump as saying, in a brief phone interview, that the two sides are in agreement, adding, “We are in complete agreement, and he knows very well who is the decision-maker here,” in reference to his relationship with Netanyahu.
On the other hand, an Israeli official, according to the website, ruled out holding the visit during the next week in light of Trump’s foreign engagements, explaining that the meeting might be postponed to the following week.
Maariv newspaper had quoted Israeli sources questioning the holding of a meeting between Netanyahu and Trump next week.
Last Friday, the Israeli Prime Minister’s Office announced that Netanyahu made a phone call to Trump to congratulate him on the 250th anniversary of American independence.
The office said in a statement that Netanyahu stressed during the call that the United States represents “the guarantor of global freedom,” noting that the two sides agreed to hold a meeting soon in the United States.
Will Netanyahu be arrested in New York?
The newspaper indicated that the anticipated visit will be Netanyahu’s first to New York since assuming the mayor’s office of the city, after he had pledged during his election campaign to seek to arrest Netanyahu based on the arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court.
But Israeli sources told the newspaper that they had received assurances from American officials in Washington and New York that the mayor does not have legal powers to implement any measure of this kind, in light of the builder not joining the court.
She added that security arrangements for Netanyahu’s visit to New York are still ongoing, and his place of residence there has not yet been decided, after several hotels were excluded for security reasons, according to the same sources.
Mamdani had pledged during his election campaign to take measures to arrest Netanyahu if he visited New York City. He said in an interview with a newspaper that Netanyahu is a “war criminal” who is “committing” crimes in Gaza, stressing that he will work to implement the arrest warrant issued against him by the International Criminal Court if he enters the city.
