Aziz Rahmani, 63, is sentenced to life imprisonment for the honor killing of his wife.

He stabbed her several times in a parking lot.

According to the district court, he could not accept that she wanted a divorce.

One November evening last year, Aziz Rahmani attacked his wife in a parking lot outside her home in a townhouse area in Västerås. He stabbed her several times in the stomach and chest, and she died from her injuries.

Their common son, who himself has said he tried to defend his mother, was also injured.

On Thursday, the Västmanland district court sentenced Aziz Rahmani to life imprisonment for the murder. The district court sees his actions as “directly intentional”.

Wanted a divorce

Prosecutors requested attempted murder for the knife attack against the son, but the district court considered that they had not proven that Aziz Rahmani had the intention to kill him and therefore sentenced him to aggravated assault.

One of the motives for the act was to preserve his own honor, writes the district court.

The week before the crime, the woman had filed for divorce. The district court considers that the overall motive was that he could not accept that the wife wanted a divorce.

– It has emerged that the man was strongly controlling in the relationship with the woman and it is clear that the act was motivated by the fact that the man could not accept that the woman no longer wanted to live with him, says councilor Sakari Alander in a statement.

“If we were in Iran, I would have killed you”

In April 2025 – seven months before the murder – he was sentenced to prison for abusing his wife, but was paroled a few months later.

During the autumn of the same year, he is said to have said:

– If we had been in Iran, I would have killed you.

And:

– Because you are a woman, you should not go out without your husband and because you do not have a husband, you should not go out at all.

Always denied

Aziz Rahmani also objected to her starting to study Swedish.

He has denied the criminal charges throughout the trial.

In addition to the life sentence, he must pay just over SEK 900,000 in damages to their six joint children.
