The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (UD) is to stop using the name form “Kiev” for the capital of Ukraine.
Instead, it should be called Sweden’s embassy in Kyjiv, says Foreign Minister Maria Malmer Stenergard (M) at the government’s summer coffee.
– Changing the form of the name is a way of showing our support for Ukraine, she says.
According to her, Ukraine has urged countries to change the names of Ukrainian cities and regions that are not connected to the “colonial” legacy from Russia.
The Honorary Consulate in Odessa shall be called the Honorary Consulate in Odesa. Even the Donbass region, the Foreign Ministry will in the future spell with an S.
– We oppose Russian attempts to wipe out Ukrainian culture, says Malmer Stenergard.
