Disney Plus takes over another right in Sweden.
The TV giant has bought the Spanish top league in soccer, La Liga.
– I don’t know if we can become the home of all football, but we can become the home of quality football, says Hans van Rijn, Nordic manager for The Walt Disney Company.
La Liga thus becomes another heavy football right on Disney Plus, which already broadcasts the Europa League, Conference League and the women’s Champions League. From the 2027/28 season, the men’s Champions League will also be added.
– I don’t know if we can become the home of all football, but we can become the home of quality football, says Hans van Rijn, Nordic manager for The Walt Disney Company.
Hope for more Swedes
Sweden is an important market for La Liga. Rebecca Diaz Gonzalez points to the long Swedish connection to the league – from Zlatan Ibrahimović and Henrik Larsson to today’s Roony Bardaghji, Carl Starfelt and Williot Swedberg.
An important part of the investment is also to reach a new audience.
– In addition to the already devoted supporters, we hope to reach families, younger viewers and people who already have Disney Plus at home.
According to Rebecca Diaz Gonzalez, football coverage of the future needs to offer more than live matches, because not everyone sits down to watch a match from start to finish anymore. The agreement means that access must be given to players in order to be able to depict the stories around them.
No extra package required
That La Liga is included in all Disney Plus subscriptions – from SEK 69 a month – is also a conscious choice.
– We do not differentiate the content between the subscriptions – the difference is about advertising and the number of simultaneous streams, not about what content you get. It has been an important part of the success so far, says Hans van Rijn.
Which matches receive Swedish commentary is decided from round to round with Real Madrid and Barcelona as the driving force.
– El Clásico is the Super Bowl of club football and will obviously get a lot of focus. The same applies to the Madrid derby. There is so much history and so many stories to tell.
At the same time, he emphasizes that the coverage should not only revolve around the two largest.
– In some rounds there are other matches that are very big, like the Seville derby between Betis and Sevilla. That type of match must of course also have Swedish commentary.
Just over a decade ago, it was Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo who dominated the headlines. Now Disney Plus is hoping that Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal will be the next big rivalry.
– You are talking about the two biggest players from the last generation and the two biggest players right now. I don’t think the question is whether the rivalry will come – it’s already here, says Hans van Rijn.
That’s how La Liga starts
Round 1 – August 16
Round 2 – 23 August
Round 3 – 30 August
El Clásico
Starting with the 2026/27 season, Disney Plus will be the new exclusive home for La Liga in Sweden. During the next four seasons, all 380 matches will be shown on the platform, with Swedish commentary on the biggest matches.
